Acute was a community-based participatory experience that revolved around a custom modular typeface. Via prompts around the exhibition space, viewers pieced together images with components of the typeface and submitted them to a specific Instagram hashtag. I then made a zine in response to the Instagram submissions and held a gathering where the zines were distributed and I was able to reflect and discuss the experience with participants.
The gallery space was set up with two chairs, and typographic prompts in vinyl around the pedestal with plexi pieces of type.
Two participants playing with the plexi pieces of type in the gallery space.
The typeface was designed using similar base components which could then be broken down and reorganized in a variety of ways.
At the end of the two week period the gallery was open, a gathering was held and participants were given a Zine featuring the work they had posted, as well as a sheet of type components cut from vinyl. This interaction allowed more dialog about the research backing the work with those who had participated.
